How to Become a Firefighter in San Diego

Fire fighters work in an honorable profession and it comes as no surprise that many of us have at some point in our lives wanted to put on that uniform and help put out fires and save lives. However, this is not a job for the faint hearted and it requires a lot of will power, critical thinking abilities and courage amongst other attributes. If you would like to become a firefighter in San Diego here is what you need to do:

Find Out the Qualifications

Just like any other job, you need to have the right qualifications. San Diego’s fire department requires that you have a valid driver’s license, CPR certification as well as an EMT certificate known in full as an Emergency Medical Technician certificate. EMT certificates can be attained through approved agencies or from the State. Besides having your papers in order, you also need to ensure that you are in good shape. As you already know, this line of work is largely physical and you need to be prepared for that. In San Diego, the fire department requires that all its firefighters be able to take on a load of 100 pounds easily. This is regardless of whether you are male or female. You therefore need to have endurance and strength. The training is also quite gruesome and you need to be prepared for this psychologically as well. The course you need to partake after getting your CPR and EMT certification is a Degree in Fire Science & Technology.

Fire departments are always looking for volunteers and the San Diego department is no exception. You can find volunteer opportunities online or by approaching the fire department to find out what such positions they have. Volunteer opportunities give you hands on experience on what to expect with the job and this is a great opportunity to create a good impression. Be eager to learn and most importantly keep up with the team as opposed to being a burden. Firefighters do not have the time to keep looking over their shoulder to find out if you are doing okay and letting the team down will not work to your advantage. Begin volunteering as soon you can.

Apply for the Available Jobs

You will not immediately become a fighter in San Diego just because you have the right qualifications. You need to know that there are different levels and you may want to consider starting out as a reserve firefighter. You can easily find the opportunities available online. Make sure that you are actively involved in the fire department’s activities by especially participating in the ride along programs. If the fire department already recognizes you as a part of the team, it shouldn’t be too hard to get your dream job.

Before you can go on to become a firefighter in San Diego, it is important that you first get the go ahead from your physician. Certain medical conditions may be a hindering factor in this profession and you need to ensure that you can actually take on the job before getting started on any of the above processes.
